Freedom is the only thing that counts

I’m originally from Chemnitz, which was still Karl-Marx-Stadt at the time. After the turn, it was a totally crazy time, just 20, everything was different from one day to the next, the borders open, everything seemed possible at once… the world was open… and there I have lived in this time with a colorful woman together…

We lived in a very small apartment on the outskirts of the city, together with a found cat…. with very little furniture, mattresses on the floor, that was mostly improvised and self-assembled. The little money available became even less, because it had to be exchanged 2:1… but no matter, there was now the D market, the world was apparently open for us and we were happy. We had big raisins in our heads… the castles in the air became bigger and bigger… the song “Freiheit” by Westernhagen was our anthem… and whenever it was played somewhere… it was sung along loudly.

And then one day we realized that we had to stop just talking about it and dreaming about it. It was time for everyone to find their own way and place in this world…. and so we parted.

I set off in a yellow VW Beetle, with all my possessions in two travel bags in the back seat, and ended up in the greater Frankfurt area in a shared apartment and the adventure was about to begin.

But very quickly I realized that here in the “West” I will probably not gain the freedom and independence I longed for, that the money here was not, as I thought, in abundance on the street, but that happiness and freedom are one’s own responsibility and really have to be worked for.

And so, after a few years, I went back to my hometown in Chemnitz, started a family, had 3 children, who are now all grown up, thought and experimented for a while in different areas and then in 2000 I set out to become an independent entrepreneur in the field of trade fair construction. That was probably my destiny, it actually went the following years always only in one direction, upward. I understood my business, the signs were always only for expansion of the company, more orders… more people… but also more stress and trouble… I was constantly traveling around the world, earning more money than I could spend… got a lot of confirmations from the customers to be the “greatest” and “most amazing” I was convinced by now, I am invulnerable… I have reached my goal… I thought

… then came the financial crisis in autumn 2008, and nothing worked anymore… Overnight, our customers went bankrupt or went on short-time work, from spring 2009 there were virtually no more orders, trade fairs and events were canceled. The company’s fixed costs for personnel and machinery were eating me up. In a very short time, everything went down the drain for me too, both financially and family-wise…. I had arrived at less than zero… and in addition the very very bad feeling to have burned me, to have lost everything… believe me, that hurt!
